Google Ads and Facebook Ads solve different problems: Google captures demand that already exists — people actively searching for what you sell — while Facebook (and the wider Meta Ads platform, including Instagram) creates demand by reaching people based on interests and behavior before they’re actively looking. Most businesses eventually need both, but the right starting point depends on your product and your sales cycle.

When Google Ads wins

If your customers know what they need and search for it — “emergency plumber,” “CRM software for small business,” “wedding photographer in [city]” — Google Ads puts you in front of that intent at the exact moment it exists. It tends to convert faster and at a higher intent level, which is why it usually costs more per click: you’re paying for people who are already close to a decision.

When Facebook/Meta Ads wins

If your product needs to be discovered — a new brand, a visually driven product, a service people don’t know they need yet — Meta’s targeting and creative formats are built for that. It’s generally cheaper per click and better for building awareness, retargeting website visitors, and nurturing an audience over time before they’re ready to buy.

How to decide where to start

Ask three questions: Do people already search for what I sell? If yes, start with Google. Is my product visual or does it benefit from storytelling? If yes, Meta earns its budget faster. Do I have first-party data (email lists, past customers, website visitors) to build custom audiences? If yes, Meta’s retargeting will likely outperform cold Google traffic early on.

The real answer: both, sequenced correctly

In practice, the strongest B2B and B2C funnels use Meta to build awareness and capture attention, and Google to close the loop when that same audience starts searching. Splitting a small budget evenly across both from day one is usually a mistake — it’s better to prove one channel works, then add the second once you have a baseline to compare against.
